If you have been to the grocery store lately and picked up a packaged or canned food item, you may have noticed a redesigned nutrition facts label. New rules by the Food and Drug Administration have called for manufacturers to make it easier for consumers to obtain information they need to make better informed and healthier food choices.
Here are some of the key changes to be aware of:
– The number of servings per container and serving size is more clearly specified. This information is now displayed in larger and/or bolder type.
– The word “calories” is now much bigger and easier to read.
– Added sugars are now required to be included on labels. These include sugars that come from syrup, honey, and juices. It also refers to sugars that are added as part of making foods such as cookies. The total amount of added sugars is displayed in grams.
– The amounts of Vitamin A and Vitamin C in food products is no longer required. However, Vitamin D and potassium have been added to nutrition labels because most Americans do not get enough.
Food manufacturers are still transitioning to the new labels and those with more than $10 million in annual sales must comply by January 1, 2020 while those under $10 million have until January 21, 2021.
