If you have a Yahoo email account, you may be eligible to file a claim as part of a proposed class-action settlement. Yahoo has agreed to pay $117.5 million to address claims stemming from several security breaches, which lead to hackers gaining access to customer accounts and information.
Multiple data intrusions happened between 2012 through 2016. The most extensive breach occurred in August 2013 and Yahoo later revealed that all 3 billion user accounts were affected.
Under the settlement terms, Yahoo is now offering two years of free credit monitoring services to those whose accounts were compromised. Account holders who can verify they already have a credit monitoring service may be eligible for a cash payment of $100 to a maximum cash amount of $358.80. Individuals who had to deal with identity theft or other problems as a direct result of the breaches may be entitled for up to $25,000 for out-of-pocket losses.
Residents of the United States or Israel who had a Yahoo account between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2016 can file a claim. Check to see if you have been notified about the settlement by email. You can also fill out a form on the settlement website at yahoodatabreachsettlement.com or email [email protected].
Claims must be filed by July 20, 2020.

Class Action
A class action is a representative action wherein one or more plaintiffs actually named in the complaint, along with their counsel bring a lawsuit on behalf of themselves and the defined class against one or more defendants. The claims of the “class representatives” must arise from facts or law common to the class members. Most class actions are called “plaintiff class actions”, where group of plaintiffs sue an individual defendant, however, a class action can be a “defendant class” action, filed against one or more defendants representing a group of defendants. A court will certify a lawsuit as a class action when there are too many class members for them all to be named as parties in the lawsuit.
