USLegal Newsletter March 2019 – Five Things to Know When Filing Your Taxes

It’s tax time and the new U.S. Tax Code has brought about changes. For a general overview of developments, see IRS Publication 17. Here are some key things to keep in mind when filing your 2018 return.

  • Use Form 1040. For most U.S. taxpayers, the redesigned form 1040 will need to be submitted to the Internal Revenue Service. For more complex tax returns, there will be schedules to use based on your circumstances. See this IRS link for more details.
  • Form 1040-A and Form 1040-EZ have been eliminated. If you are used to filing form 1040-A or form 1040-EZ, you won’t be able to find them this year. Use the new form 1040 to file your return.
  • Tax rates have been lowered. Income tax rates have now decreased in most brackets. Tax rate percentages are now 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%.
  • The standard deduction has nearly doubled.  The previous standard deduction was $6,350 for single filers and $12,700 for married couples filing jointly. The new standard deduction is $12,000 for single filers and $24,000 for married couples filing jointly.
  • The personal exemption has been eliminated. Previously, you could claim a personal exemption for yourself, spouse, and dependents to lower your taxable income. However, the personal exemption has been suspended.

There are a lot more changes as a result of new tax rules including provisions that affect corporate tax rates, estate taxes, home mortgage interest deductions, child tax credits, healthcare mandate penalty taxes, retirement plans, saving for education and more. Consult an accountant or tax law attorney in your area if you have questions or need more information.

The deadline to file your 2018 tax return is Monday, April 15, 2019. If you live in Maine or Massachusetts, you will have until April 17 because of state holidays.
