According to estimates, there are more than 200 million drivers in the United States and more than 6 million vehicle accidents occur each year. There are many legal issues that come into play when driving an automobile, especially if you cause an accident. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts to consider:
Do not flee the scene of the accident. Leaving the scene of an accident when personal injuries to individuals or property damage to vehicles is involved could result in costly fines and jail time.
Do call for emergency medical care if there are individuals who are seriously injured. Do render assistance to any injured persons, but do not to attempt to move them.
Do understand your state laws in regards to whether or not police need to be called. Some states require that a police officer always be called to the scene. Other states require police involvement only in circumstances when individuals are injured or there is significant property damage to vehicles.
Do exchange information with other parties involved in the accident including providing your name, address, phone number, driver’s license number, license plate number, and insurance carrier information and policy number.
Do avoid statements of apology or admissions of fault: there may be other factors involved in causing the accident that you are not aware of.
Do not move your vehicle unless the accident is minor.
Do attempt to secure the names and telephone numbers of witnesses, even though they may believe you are at fault.
Do be truthful to your insurance company. Misrepresentations may result in cancellation of a policy for insurance and expose you to even more liability.
